The Ford Ranger has been available in the UK since 2011 after being successful in the states since 1983 by Ford Motor Company. The Ranger is a monster that is classed as a mid-size pickup truck. The truck can come with either a two door single cab, a two door extended cab or a four door double cab. There are three different engines available, a 2.5 litre Duratec 25 l4 petrol, a 2.2 litre Duratorq l4 diesel or a 3.2 litre Duratorq l5 diesel. In terms of transmission there are both manual and automatic options. You also get the choice of rear wheel drive or a 4×4. The Ford Ranger is supposedly going to have a face lift this year which may well include the introduction of a new ‘panther’ engine.

Volvo V50

The Volvo V50 was put into production in 2004 and it lasted until 2012 when it was replaced by the Volvo V40, which is also the Volvo that was the V50’s predecessor. It is officially classed as a small family car though it probably isn’t a car that you would immediately associate with the word small thanks to it’s 178 inch length. It comes in one body style which is a 5-door estate, the engines available are plentiful, there is 6 different petrol options and 4 different diesel options. You can get the Volvo V50 five speed automatic or a five and six speed manual.

Lexus CT

The Lexus CT, also know as the CT 200h, came into the spotlight on the early 2011 and it is still being produced today. It is related to the Corolla and Toyota Auris and is Lexus’ contribution to the compact executive car class and it comes in a 5-door hatchback bodystyle. It was introduced to the UK by Kylie Minogue who also featured in the TV advertisement and she also was sponsored by the Lexus CT for her Aphrodite World Tour in the UK. It won the best small car award for the over $35,000 category in Australia 2011. There is only one engine available and it’s a good one; a 1.8 litre l4 – 100KW (134 hp) engine.

Vauxhall Ampera

The Vauxhall Ampera has been with us for almost five years, it is also known as the Chevrolet Volt and is closely related to the Cadillac ELR. It is classed as a compact car and is a 5 door hatchback, though having said that, you could be forgiven for thinking that it is a saloon. The Vauxhall Ampera can come fully electric or you can get a petrol electric hybrid. The purely electric model has a range of 38 miles and the hybrid version offering 62 mpg, also with the petrol hybrid Vauxhall claim a maximum cruising range of over 300 miles. The Vauxhall Ampera was the first plug-in hybrid passenger car to go on sale in the UK.

Mercedes-Benz SL Class

The Mercedes-Benz SL Class. What a treat. The first thing you need to know about this car is that it will make you turn your head. The SL’s legacy goes way back, all the way to 1954, when Mercedes introduced the W198 and W121, both of which are absolutely gorgeous cars. In my opinion they lost their way between 1972 and 2012, but then the current R231 model hit the scene, and it is stunning again. The new SL R231 comes with the choice of 4 engines, a 3.5 litre V6, a 4.7 litre V8 turbocharged engine, a 5.5 litre V8 turbocharged engine and a 6.0 litre V12 turbocharged engine, all of which run on a 7 speed automatic transmission.

Mitsubishi ASX

The Mitsubishi ASX is a crossover SUV that comes at a very attractive price when compared to its rivals. The ASX has its routes in Mitsubishi’s 1991 compact MPV which was called the Mitsubishi Space Runner. Thankfully Mitsubishi changed the Space Runners direction for the third generation in 2010, no longer would it be an MPV, it would now be the much more aesthetically pleasing crossover SUV that it is today. It is related to the Citroen C4 Aircross, Dodge Caliber and the Peugeot 4008. You get the choice of 3 engines with the Mitsubishi ASX, a 2.0 litre 4B1 engine, a 1.8 litre turbo diesel or a 2.2 litre turbo diesel. You can get the ASX with both automatic and manual transmission.

Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 has been around since 2005 and it arrived on the market as Audi’s first entry to the SUV class, though it didn’t actually go on sale until 2006. There are 3 diesel engines and 3 petrol engines to choose from. Diesel: 3.0 litre V6, 3.6 litre VR6 and a 4.2 litre V8 FSI. Petrol 3.0 litre V6, 4.2 litre V8 and a 6.0 litre V12. The second generation Audi Q7 was introduced at the Detroit Motor Show in January and there has also been a diesel-powered plug-in hybrid variant.

Volkswagen Passat

The Volkswagen Passat has been around for a long time, though it hasn’t always been known as the Passat, it has been called a number of different names; Dasher, Quantum, Santana, Corsar, Magotan and Carat. The original Passat came about in 1973, known as the B1 and it was available up until 1981. The B2 followed immediately and ran until 1988 when it was replaced by the B3 and B4 models which ran until 1996. The B5 is probably as far back as you would want to go if you were looking into getting a second hand Volkswagen Passat, which was produced from 1996-2996 receiving a facelift along the way in 2001. The B6 and B7 models came about in 2005 but were recently replaced in 2014 by the B8, which is a very smart looking car full of innovative technology/

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 started out as a concept car called the MINAGI which was displayed at the 2011 GenevaMotor Show. It was put into production in early 2012 and named the CX-5, a shout to the Mazda CX-7 that it was replacing as well as the Mazda Tribute. The CX-5 is related to the Ford Escape and is classed as a compact crossover SUV, it has 5 doors and a front engine layout, with either front wheel or four wheel drive ability. Three engines are available with the CX-5, a 2.0 L a 2.5 L and a 2.2 L, all of which are part of Mazda’s  SKYACTIV range. Both automatic and manual transmissions are available. A facelifted model is expected in 2016 after being unveiled at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Range Rover Evoque

Land Rover’s Range Rover Evoque has been criticized by some as a bit of a cash cow, but we see it as a smart entry from Land Rover into a class which suited what they are good at. It is classed as a compact luxury crossover SUV and you can get it with either 5 or 3 doors and it is available as a four wheel drive car. It draws inspiration from both the Land Rover Freelander and the Land Rover Discovery Sport. It has been around since 2011 and it sold the best part of 88,000 units in its first year alone. There are two engines available, a 2.0L Ecoboost straight 4 petrol or a 2.2L Duratorq straight 4 diesel.

Lexus IS

The Lexus IS is Lexus’ entry level model in their sport range, in other words a more financially accessible version of the Lexus ES though only just. The IS was first introduced as the Toyota Altezza before being re-branded and named in 1999 as the Lexus IS. The second generation model is where the IS found it’s feet and started looking that little bit more sporty, and that version was produced from 2005-2013 with a fair few facelifts in that period. So if you are looking at a second hand Lexus IS from 2005-2013 bear those facelifts/updates in mind. The third generation model was then introduced in 2013 and is still the same today, however if the last generation is anything to go by we will be seeing some updates and restyling efforts soon enough.

3 Cars that I Miss

Hello everyone, in this post I’m going to look at a few blasts from the past, my past, and why I miss them.

Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla is of course still at large today. It is still a very good car in my opinion, however when it comes to the Toyota Corolla, there is one in particular that I used to adore, and now it is no longer out there, thanks to the amount of time gone by, I miss it dearly. The Corolla I miss is the second generation model, now I remember this as it what my Granddad used to drive many years ago, if he wasn’t driving it, he’d be working on it in the garage. I used to get involved from time to time, making that car somewhat of a talisman for the relationship I had with my Granddad. It truly was a beautiful car, and I know I sound cliche when I say it, but they don’t make them like they used to.  I had a little look at a second hand Toyota Corolla the other day, and it was really nice, but it was a replica, to get the genuine article from the 70s is quite a struggle apparently.

Ford Cortina

The Ford Cortina…. You don’t get much more classic than that. The Ford Cortina was introduced to the world in 1962 on the second of September. The first carnation of it was a pretty little car, as was the second, but for me it was the third generation version which came about in 1970 and ran until 1976, which really stole my heart. I don’t really have a sentimental tale about why this car is one I miss, other than it looked nice, and I miss cars like that in general, seeing cops drive around in them on the old shows and hoping to catch a glimpse of one in real life. Again it is a pretty hard task to try and get the exact Cortina you desire, these days, at any one time there is less than a handful of second hand Ford Cortina models on the market.

Saab 9-5

Unfortunately a couple of years ago Saab fell upon some hard times and as a result the Saab 9-5 is no longer produced as a new car. The reason I miss the Saab 9-5 is different to the other cars in this article. The Saab 9-5 is dead to me as it is a car I have actually owned myself, and it was the first car I owned that I felt I could show off a bit, partly because it was my first saloon car after driving a variety of different hatch backs. My 9-5 was a 2007 model and in my personal opinion it looked great. The 9-5 was also great to drive as far as I’m concerned and if they were still making new models I would definitely be getting one. Having said that there are some good second hand Saab 9-5 deals out there.

2014 Hyundai i20 info

If you are a fan of the Hyundai i20 like we are, you will be pleased to know that more pictures and full details have been released regarding the car.  From what we have read so far, it sounds like good news, so the Ford Fiesta and the VW Polo better watch out. In comparison to the last i20 there are a few things that are apparent from that jump, it has grown in size and has a load of technology to offer.

The new i20 looks a little more defined and muscular than its predecessor, it is lower, wider and longer than it was before, that combined with an extra 45mm added to the wheelbase is what really helps increase the space inside the car. If you have no passengers in the back you will have even more space to play with, thanks to the flat folding rear seats and the double boot floor.

Are you a fan of colour? Well Hyundai are really pulling out all the stops with this one, and they have claimed that the i20 will have the widest range of exterior and interior combinations in the supermini class, including 5 different interior trims, including one leather trim and 9 exterior shades to choose from.

Another area Hyundai have attempted to turn on its head as far as superminis are concerned is with the cars technology and comfort. As we know, the Peugeot 208 currently has the game won in the sunroof department (they have a huge fixed glass roof), however the Hyundai i20 in the spirit of one-upmanship, is going to be the first in the class to feature a panoramic opening sunroof.

I SPY: Mini Countryman

A Mini Countryman has been turning heads over the last day or two, but it isn’t the current Countryman, it is in fact the new revised version which may come as a shock as the countryman has only recently had a facelift. From what we can see this new Mini Countryman seems to have larger wheels and a sloping roofline making the Countyman look a little more aerodynamic and wild.

The grille also appears to be different however we are confident this has something to do with the misleading paint job that has been used to obscure some of the cars details. It is said that this new Countryman will be more than just a cosmetic revamp, but there will also be changes under the body, notably the Countryman will use the UKL1 platform and pack a three-cylinder turbo engine which is currently used in the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer.

What Were They Thinking: Daihatsu Materia

The Daihatsu Materia looks like something cartoon legends the Anthill Mob would have driven in a race with Penelope Pitstop – if you want something totally original then this is it. I remember the first time I saw the Daihatsu Materia, I was at Dudley MOT getting my car serviced and I’d genuinely never seen a car like it.

Lets face it, Daihatsu aren’t exactly known for making good looking cars, take the Daihatsu Charade for example, she’s not exactly a looker, however the Materia, depending on your taste might just be a winner.

The Daihatsu Materia is way out on the edge when it comes to modern car design. It represents a whole mini MPV-worth of individuality that makes a big impact wherever it goes.

Want a head-turner then this is the car for you with a boxy shape that does not fit into any of the regular boxes normally ticked by motor manufacturers.

The Materia is one of the latest expressions of 21st century style from Daihatsu which has always been a specialist in smaller cars.

It is quite big and powerful for a Daihatsu featuring a lively 1.5-litre petrol engine that returns a reasonable average fuel economy figure.

It is a phenomenon in Japan and it is gaining a cult following in the USA. In our humble isle it draws gasps of surprise wherever it goes.

Practicality

The Daihatsu Materia has four doors and a surprising amount of rear leg room. In fact it has roughly the same amount of interior space as a large family car.

On the road, the lofty driving position is a big bonus and the seats are extremely comfortable.

The ride on this car’s small wheels can be quite harsh on some surfaces. The central position of the instruments is also an acquired taste forcing the driver to move his head instead of just his gaze. They would be better placed directly in front of the driver.

The rear seat both slides and reclines and features a 60/40 split that allows awkward loads to be accommodated. The front passenger seat back can also fold almost flat if required creating a large nearly flat load bay. The loading lip is usefully low as well.

Plentiful headroom makes this car feel big inside although narrow side windows and a dark interior don’t help create an airy atmosphere.

Life Style

The Daihatsu Materia’s boxy style with upswept styling line and tapering rear windows gives it an unforgettable visual image – helped by a high bonnet and near vertical drop front.

It is marketed to appeal to younger style-conscious families but it is also hoped to appeal to older people who will like its ease of access and deep doors.

In terms of price it is no bargain but a five-year unlimited mileage warranty is a big pull. The plastics used in the interior aren’t the best in the world but most edges are well finished and everything seems solidly put together.

As far as the environment is concerned the Materia’s emissions are high for a mini MPV.

It’s no warm hatch but the Materia does handle competently with precise steering and little body roll – a surprise given its height.

Security and Safety

The Daihatsu Materia has anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution fitted as standard. It also has twin front and side airbags, but no curtain airbags and no stability control. That said it does have ISOFIX child seat mountings, while central locking and an engine immobiliser deter those with sticky fingers.

The Finishing Touches

The guy who loves opposite used to have a second hand Daihatsu Sportrak, and it would offend my eyes of a morning. The Materia on the other hand is a different story. There’s just one trim level for the Daihatsu Materia, and while none of the kit looks particularly cutting edge, much of it is fitted as standard including the rear privacy glass, electric windows, a CD/radio system, front and rear foglamps and rear parking sensors. The only cost option is metallic paint.

Proton Gen-2

So, what are the facts? The Proton Gen-2 was introduced in 2004, it is in the compact car lass, it has a 5-door hatchback body style and a front engine, front wheel drive. With the Proton Gen-2 you get the choice of either a 4 speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual. There are three variations of a 1.6 litre engine available as well as a 1.3 litre option if you don’t need that extra power. It is a successor to the Proton Wira Aeroback and it was the predecessor to the Proton Suprima S which is still being produced today.

Isuzu D-Max

It is classed as a compact pickup and comes in a variety of different body styles, you get your pick of a 2-door cab chassis, a 2-door utility body style, and then the same two options but with 4 doors.  The Isuzu D-Max is currently in its second generation, and available with the choice of three different engines, two of which are 2.5 litre, one of which is 3.0 litre, and all of which are diesel.

Infiniti G

The Infiniti G series was unveiled way back in 1990, it was produced for 6 years, it then had a 2 year break, before it was reintroduced in 1998, and since then it has carried on going, to this day. The second generation model ran from 1998-2002 and was related to the Nissan Sentra, the third generation model ran from 2002-2007 and the fourth generation model has been produced ever since. You can get the new Infiniti G as a 2-door coupe, a 4-door sedan or a 2-door convertible, it is classed as a entry-level luxury car/ compact executive car.

Jeep Compass

The Jeep Compass is a beautiful looking car that was introduced in 2006, after being assembled at the Belvidere assembly plant in Illinois. The Compass hasn’t changed much over the years, and comes with the choice of two 2.0 litre engines (one petrol, one turbo diesel), a 2.2 litre turbo diesel and a 2.4 litre petrol engine. There are 2 manual options and 2 automatic options. Jeep have said that the both the Jeep Compass and the Patriot are going to be replaced come 2016 by a single model of the same class which is yet to be revealed.

MG ZT

The MG ZT  is a car manufactured by MG Rover from 2001-2005 in Birmingham, it came to an end when MG Rover Group went defunct in April 2005, marking the end of the last domestically owned mass-production car manufacturer in the British motor industry. It was classed as an executive car and came with the choice of two different body styles, the 4-door saloon or the 5-door estate. It was closely related to the famous Rover 75. There was a good choice of engines available with the MG ZT, two 1.8 litres, one 2.0 litre, a 2.5 litre and a 4.6 litre.

Ssangyong Rodius

The Ssangyong Rodius is the largest people carrier on the market. The Rodius can comfortably seat seven with loads of room inside the cabin. The car’s exterior design will not appeal to everyone.

The Rodius is comfortable to drive and comes with an affordable asking price. The Rodius is highly equipped and provides good value for the money. The car is larger than all the competition, hopefully that will prove to be a good thing. It isn’t a looker, I remember the first Ssangyong I saw was a second hand Ssangyong Korando, which is definitely the styling route Ssangyong should be going down.

The car was designed to comfortably carry seven passengers and their luggage, and that’s exactly what it does. Passengers have plenty of space giving the cabin a roomy and comfortable feel.

The car has a lot of nice features such as a leather steer-wheel and 16-inch alloy wheels. Also standard issue is parking sensors, buyers will be thankful for that. Rear visibility can be somewhat limited when the car is loaded down.

The only engine on offer is a 162bhp 2.7-litre diesel. It reaches 0-60mph in 13.1seconds and boasts a top speed of 104mph. The engine provides plenty of power at the lower end of the rev range, which makes it very capable of carrying large loads. All models are fitted with a five-speed automatic gearbox.

Practicality

The Ssangyong Rodius is inexpensive to purchase and run. Insurance rates should be reasonable though fuel economy won’t be great. The Rodius is bargain priced and provides good value for the money.

The Rodius provides loads of cabin space. Passengers will enjoy more than adequate space while the car can seat seven it can also accommodate their luggage as well.

The car’s controls and dials are mostly well placed although some of the controls are located in odd places. There is a flower vase mounted to the dash and that adds a nice touch to the car’s cabins. Displays are large and easy to read.

The Rodius provides decent levels of comfort. Seats are large and supportive and the cabin is very spacious adding to the already good levels of comfort. The car delivers a smooth ride and is quite impressive.

The car provides good accessibility. Even adults should be able to access the car’s rearmost seats without too much fuss. The seats are large and comfortably seat three adults. Once inside, passengers shouldn’t have any trouble climbing into a seat.

The Rodius is easy to park. Despite the car’s large size, the Rodius handles well and is easy to steer and maneuver at low speeds. The car provides a high drive position and good visibility. Rearward visibility can be somewhat limited at times and parking sensors come in handy as well as the car’s large side mirrors.

Life Style

The Ssangyong Rodius provides plenty of power and good steering. The car is designed to carry seven people and not for speed. The Rodius is a large car and can be cumbersome to maneuver through crowded places.

This is an excellent family car. It provides comfortable seating for seven at an affordable price. The boot is large enough to accommodate most family related items. The car’s interior is rugged enough to cope with children.

This is not a good first car. It is simply too large and way more than what most first time buyers need. The car is so large that a novice driver may have difficulty judging the car’s extremities, it maybe best stick to hatchbacks, like a second hand Lexus CT or something

Besides the fact that this is the largest people carrier on the market, the Rodius provides an excellent build quality and a good driving experience with an abundance of passenger and luggage space. The Rodius is surprisingly well built. The Rodius also has a touch of class that is way beyond its modest origins.

Security and Safety

The car’s standard security features include remote central locking, an engine immobiliser and a security alarm. The Rodius is unlikely to be too appealing to car thieves.

The car’s standard safety features include twin front airbags, ABS with electronic stability control and three-point seatbelts for all. The car’s large size also offers an element of safety incase of a crash.

The Finishing Touches

The car’s standard audio unit includes a radio/CD unit. The system boasts good sound quality and is easy to use.

SE versions add leather seats, cruise control, privacy glass and a sunroof. The car looks rather large no matter what colour is chosen. Parking sensors come as standard and make a lot of sense.

Summary

This huge seven-seater comes well equipped and offers buyers good value for the money. Badge snobs may opt for a more stylish designer badge, for it does have the appeal of a Subaru Justy, but if you don’t care about looks, then it might be worth a look. The car delivers plenty of space for seven passengers and their luggage. The design will not appeal to all but the car does make a lot of sense.

Rolls-Royce Phantom

The Rolls-Royce Phantom is a wonderfully put together piece of machinery that is incredibly comfortable and exceptionally fast for its size.

Practicality

The Phantom will cost a fortune to run, but buyers with the money to purchase it in the first place are unlikely to be put off because it drinks fuel and costs a fortune to insure.
The Phantom is unusual in that it is fitted with ‘coach doors’ which open towards the rear making it easier to get in and out.
The car is massive so there is a luxurious amount of space – particularly in the back which is important as that is where most owners are going to spend their time as the chauffeur takes care of the driving.
The boot is predictably massive and easily able to swallow the results of spending spree at a decent-sized high class department store.
Those buying the Phantom are likely to own big houses with large garages attached which is just as well as a huge home is needed to accommodate the dimensions of this car.
The Phantom offers the best of both worlds as it was styled in England but engineered in Germany by parent company BMW. The cabin materials and aroma are pure Rolls, but fit and finish are on a different plane than in the old hand-built days and the attention to detail is superb.
Those owners who do happen to get behind the wheel of the Phantom will immediately notice its sound ergonomics. The driver sits at Land Rover Discovery level, although rearward visibility is poor to ensure rear passengers get the required degree of privacy. The car has a simplified version of BMW’s iDrive system, a twist knob that controls all the major heating, entertainment and information functions.

Life Style

The Phantom is for lottery winners or lords of the manor with money to burn and an appreciation of a class act. It meets the Rolls-Royce standard of being impossible to ignore while the interior is truly elegant – finished to the highest standards using the best materials.
